A Different Christmas Poem

No idea where it started or who wrote it.

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

"My dad stood his watch in the jungles of Nam ,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and American flag.
"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home."

"I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.."

"Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.
So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long."

"For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.  Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Why is my 'mood' set to Cranky?
Because Congress and the President continue to make new Veterans but keep cutting the promised benefits and services of the ones we have now.

My brother sent along an email. Usually it is my sister that forwards stuff. She rarely checks Snopes.
This time my brother did not but it is a "true" email.

From Snopes
School Prayer

Claim:   Principal Jody McLoud of Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee, delivered a controversial speech before a school football game.

Status:   True.

Example:   [Collected via e-mail, October 2000]
Principal McLoud's speech was also read into the Congressional Record on 20 September 2000 by Representative Zach Wamp of Tennessee.

McLoud took this to mean that the US was failing.

But you see I take this as the constitution working.
If I was one of the non-religious people in the stands, why should I be forced to listen to a religious speech?

Besides the whole speech that the principal gave is very slanted.

sexual perversion and call it an alternate lifestyle
sexual promiscuity by dispensing condoms and calling it safe sex.
killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control.
involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth
depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant

Very loaded words for someone that “do not need to add an intentional transgression”

I have worked with gays and lesbians. Most, I agree, had a choice in their “lifestyle”.
Live as a gay or lesbian, or don’t have sex for the rest of their lives.
I have also met and worked with girls who were so… degraded by the ‘guys’ in their lives that they “switched”.

I have to say that you are not going to stop kids from having sex once they try it.
Dispensing condoms is a cheap way to slow down and somewhat deal with the un-wed mothers and the financial problems the states have with supporting them. Condoms will stop the ‘oops’ and if we make sure the kids have all the condoms they might use then we might have fewer 'welfare' families.

I absolutely despise this, “killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control.”
But until the people that want to stop it line up to support the child or we plant birth control in the BOYS and girls, it is not going to stop. It was illegal before Roe vs. Wade and it still happened.

“involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth”
I had to laugh at this one. Any teacher that tried this would be brought up on charges just like a teacher trying to hold a prayer in class. Ain’t going to happen.

“depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant”
I know my sister is religious. From the email it seems that my brother is too, at least somewhat.
I am more like my Dad. I believe but I am not sure how to explain it. It does not match the Methodist theology I grew up with. It is not the 'Christian' teachings I got baptized under. So far I have found no one else that believes MY way.
Most of the “ignorant, simple minded, people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions” that I have met try to force their version of beliefs on me.

No I do not believe that the Bible is the “word of God”. There are too many inconsistencies and contradictions. Yes, I believe that the bible is a ‘good’ book. It has many ways of getting a population to live together in harmony and treating each other well.  But so do the Torah and the Koran.

In the end, all of the principal’s speech was about choice.
Choice of lifestyle, choice to have sex (protection or not), and Choice of religion (or none, which is still a choice).

As for the "one nation, under GOD." statement at the end, that was not in the founding fathers documents.
It was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 at the height of anti-Communist fervor.
It was an attempt to link patriotism with religious piety.
"In God we trust" was adopted as the official motto of the United States in 1956.

Basically ancient history trying to influence current affairs.

In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.

Goodbye Ray

'Martian Chronicles' author Ray Bradbury dies at age 91

Not his best by my way of though but lots of people loved it.

We are slowly loosing our greatest and due to the systems in place we will not see their like again.

"Ah, your an author. We will keep your biggest selling series on the shelf. Sorry, no room for any more. Back catalog of books? Can't afford to keep them printed. So Sorry, out of print."

"Music catalog? Older songs? Nah, all we got is what they play on the radio."

The same goes for movies, if it came out be fore video tape you probably will not see it ever again. Unless it was a "timeless classic".

Ah well. /rant

Goodbye Ray one of my early favorite authors.

Interesting take on an Idea

I stumbled on to this person's webpages and as I was going through his 'ideas' I hit this page.

I first thought that this was a oddity but then gave it a bit of thought.

Scary how that works.

If we stop going to the damn things then Hollywood might just get the message.

Interesting and scary story about Women's rights.

This one was posted as a link from my daughter.

Scary story because you can see how it could happen.

To quote my daughter
"Morag shared a link on G+ that I think everyone should read: ILU-486 by Amanda Ching. It’s… well, it’s uncomfortable and unsettling, honestly. The future it imagines is not far off. It’s both foreign and familiar. I want to buy a bunch of these stickers and post them in women’s bathrooms."

Scarborough Research 210-736-3080

I have been receiving calls for more than a week from 210-736-3080 I called back and was advised it was
Scarborough Research doing a survey on television, Radio and newspapers in my area.

Checking this number on Google

Seems like they are a VERY annoying company.

Scarborough Research 1-800-753-6043

I called the number found there. They advised that they are a "research" company and not a 'telemarketer' therefore they are exempt from the "Do Not Call" per Congress. They don't sell anything directly on the phone.

They just waste your time and if you have a cell phone as a contact then they waste your cell time. They use your time and money to make it for themselves.

Time to make a change in that don't you guys think?

Steve Miller with Greg Allman at the Cary Koka Booth Amphitheatre

Well last night was the second and probably last concert I will be able to make this year.

Steve Miller with Gregg Allman opening.
Cut to save space, avoid rantyness )

Yes even though I rant about the venues I usually enjoy the Music.
As Steve Miller is in my top 10 (if I have a top 10, can't remember) I enjoyed the concert very much.
May have to go see him next time he is in the area.
