Jimmy Buffett at the Time Warner Music Pavilion
I am not a full-fledged Parrothead but I do like Jimmy Buffett.
I have been trying to go to at least one concert of every group that I like to listen to.
So last night I went to the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion.
It was the "Welcome to Fin Land tour" which if you know Buffett is a play on one of his songs.
The music was great if a little loud for the people in the seats. It does not appear that they have many speakers behind the rows of seating for the people in the lawn. This means that the speakers up front have to be turned way up to allow the people in the lawn to hear. A wee bit painful on some of the notes.
The venue is ok. Rows of plastic chairs like at the ballpark. The problems are many. Very little signage. So take your best guess as to where you are going and what you are trying to do. From the parking lot. Do you walk down this road or are you going to try walking to the tree line to find a path to the front gate? Then again exactly where is the front gate? Well there are some buildings that way...
Once you are at the gate there were no real defined lines for the entrance. 8 -10 gates finally opened and people moved en mass to swamp them. Backpacks are encouraged for the people on the lawn but then they have to be inspected. Why no separate lines for this? The website for the venue says "-Water: One sealed bottle of water allowed per patron." Which is great except for the next rule. "WHAT NOT TO BRING: -Bottles " Once inside the gate you are required to pour your bottle of water into a plastic cup. They may or may not have lids for them. This also is an annoyance for drinks bought there.
$9 for what most places would call a large soda. In a cup. Now there is a "free" refill available or that is the offer. By the time I got back to the individual booth that sold me the soda, they were closed.
Remember that all the soda is being served in cups. Several places had bottles and poured it into the cup for you. Yet at least three places sold beer in cans and the people got to keep their cans.
As you may be able to tell I dislike cups that spill or that can be crushed by the idiot that is too drunk to stand but way too pumped by the thought that he can dance to sit the F$%^ down. They bought the seats to stand and sway with the music. Why not spend less and get a lawn "space"?
As you may guess from this although I had a 'seat' I did not get to spend much time in it. To even see the video screen on the wings I had to stand.
Back to the signage or lack there of. Enter the grounds and there were steps straight ahead. Two curving paths lead to each side. No signs. No view from the entrance as to where the paths lead except around the sides. So up and over. Then walk down the hill to the end of the lawn seating and through checkpoint 1. down the trench to checkpoint 2. Each one checking my orders ...
Oh wait sorry, but it did seem that way. Checking my ticket to ensure that I could enter the MAIN PATH from the right to the left. That is separated by a head high concrete wall behind the seats. That has a tube fence on top of that. Yep got to keep that lawn scum from overwhelming the trench. Oh wait they have to use that to go to the consession stands and the bathrooms. Well slow them down by checking their seating as they LEAVE and then again as they come back
As another added bonus have the same amount of bathrooms for men and women. This way the men get a thrill when the women get tired of waiting in those long non-moving lines and visit the men's room
As you can tell I was VERY under-whelmed by the venue
Back to the music. They started at about 7:40 with a small group (ILO Ilo Ferreira) that I could not understand (English and Portuguese) and did not hear the name but the actual music was not bad. When Buffett came on stage at just about 8:00pm I was ready for him. The music was good and not any excessive breaks between the songs.
They had a few pauses that I assume they used for breaks and such but they continued the music by letting several of the Band have their turn in the spotlight. Nadirah Shakoor did a really excellent cover of Bill Withers"Use Me". The 3 time CMA award winner Mac McAnally (they made this point over and over) did several songs.
Towards the end of the concert Buffett did a couple of songs from his Volcano album that they had never done in concert before.
As noted at the beginning I enjoyed the music. Disliked the Venue
Was it worth the money? As I stated at the beginning I have been trying to go to a concert of every band I like. If Jimmy plays in North Carolina again I will make an attempt at seeing him again. Just not at the TWC Pavilion. I will NOT go back to the pavilion unless it is the ONLY site for a band.
edit: added Group Ilo Ferreira
