A Different Christmas Poem

No idea where it started or who wrote it.

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

"My dad stood his watch in the jungles of Nam ,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue...an American flag.
"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home."

"I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.."

"Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.
So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long."

"For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.  Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Why is my 'mood' set to Cranky?
Because Congress and the President continue to make new Veterans but keep cutting the promised benefits and services of the ones we have now.

My brother sent along an email. Usually it is my sister that forwards stuff. She rarely checks Snopes.
This time my brother did not but it is a "true" email.

From Snopes
School Prayer

Claim:   Principal Jody McLoud of Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee, delivered a controversial speech before a school football game.

Status:   True.

Example:   [Collected via e-mail, October 2000]
Principal McLoud's speech was also read into the Congressional Record on 20 September 2000 by Representative Zach Wamp of Tennessee.

McLoud took this to mean that the US was failing.

But you see I take this as the constitution working.
If I was one of the non-religious people in the stands, why should I be forced to listen to a religious speech?

Besides the whole speech that the principal gave is very slanted.

sexual perversion and call it an alternate lifestyle
sexual promiscuity by dispensing condoms and calling it safe sex.
killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control.
involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth
depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant

Very loaded words for someone that “do not need to add an intentional transgression”

I have worked with gays and lesbians. Most, I agree, had a choice in their “lifestyle”.
Live as a gay or lesbian, or don’t have sex for the rest of their lives.
I have also met and worked with girls who were so… degraded by the ‘guys’ in their lives that they “switched”.

I have to say that you are not going to stop kids from having sex once they try it.
Dispensing condoms is a cheap way to slow down and somewhat deal with the un-wed mothers and the financial problems the states have with supporting them. Condoms will stop the ‘oops’ and if we make sure the kids have all the condoms they might use then we might have fewer 'welfare' families.

I absolutely despise this, “killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control.”
But until the people that want to stop it line up to support the child or we plant birth control in the BOYS and girls, it is not going to stop. It was illegal before Roe vs. Wade and it still happened.

“involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth”
I had to laugh at this one. Any teacher that tried this would be brought up on charges just like a teacher trying to hold a prayer in class. Ain’t going to happen.

“depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant”
I know my sister is religious. From the email it seems that my brother is too, at least somewhat.
I am more like my Dad. I believe but I am not sure how to explain it. It does not match the Methodist theology I grew up with. It is not the 'Christian' teachings I got baptized under. So far I have found no one else that believes MY way.
Most of the “ignorant, simple minded, people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions” that I have met try to force their version of beliefs on me.

No I do not believe that the Bible is the “word of God”. There are too many inconsistencies and contradictions. Yes, I believe that the bible is a ‘good’ book. It has many ways of getting a population to live together in harmony and treating each other well.  But so do the Torah and the Koran.

In the end, all of the principal’s speech was about choice.
Choice of lifestyle, choice to have sex (protection or not), and Choice of religion (or none, which is still a choice).

As for the "one nation, under GOD." statement at the end, that was not in the founding fathers documents.
It was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 at the height of anti-Communist fervor.
It was an attempt to link patriotism with religious piety.
"In God we trust" was adopted as the official motto of the United States in 1956.

Basically ancient history trying to influence current affairs.

In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.

Politics

I'm sure this one has been floating around but I thought it was kinda cute.

WAY over the top a bit stupid but there are some funnies

http://www.palinaspresident.us/

In a related political report
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,433314,00.html

Lots more interesting tidbits but

"It might not fit the simple template for a 36-year veteran of the Senate to not understand what vice presidents do (after all, eight vice presidents have served with him), but Biden knew less about this than the political outsider, Sarah Palin. Given that they are running to be vice president, why didn’t that story dominate the news coverage after the debate?"

My thoughts are:

We lived through Dan Quayle

Which way am I voting?  I still don't know.

As for the other votes... most will be against the incumbent... good, bad, or especially indifferent, we need to start over.

700 Trillion

814,000,000,000,000

814 trillion payout to the businesses

 303,824,640

303 million July 2008 population Estimate per cia.gov

 2,679,177.04

  Per person in the USA

If congress has paid the people the cash rather than giving it to big business, we could have had a "trickle up" effect.

People pay off the loans that the banks are calling bad.
Banks could then pay off their bad debts
the economy would be 'stimulated' as people would spend the extra.

You know and I know very few people would save the cash.

But we all know what happened. Congress is mainly rich people, with a minimum of Very UPPER middle class if that.
They have a 'responsibility' to help out the other rich ones (bankers, brokerage companies).
That is who pays their 're-election fund' anyway.

-------- edited ------

Would have sworn that the number they were tossing around was Trillion but the latest I found is Billion.

814,000,000,000

814 billion payout to the businesses

 303,824,640

303 million July 2008 population Estimate per cia.gov

 2,797.66

  Per person in the USA

still $2797 per person in the US would make quite a dent in the debt issues. And stimulate the economy.
